Research Tips: Easy-to-Use online tools

Wish you could research a historic building — or your ancestors? This Dec. 9, 2023 article in the Southeast Missourian explains how to use easy-to-use online tools to do historical research. The article is about finding ancestors but it can be used to find information on historic buildings as well.

For fun, go to shsmo.org/collections/newspapers/mdnp and follow the article’s instructions, and click on “Search Digital Newspapers.” For example, type in the McKinney Building, a building recently purchased by the City of Columbia. You’ll find a treasure trove of historical information about the origins of the building. All of the tools listed in the article are free!

The article lists lots of other free and easy-to-use digital tools—no need to be an expert. If you need help, you can always go to the State Historical Society of Missouri in downtown Columbia or the Research Library at the Boone County History & Culture Center to ask for help or suggestions.

CoMo Preservation is devoted to helping homeowners, landlords, and institutions preserve historic architecture. Original period styles can be replicated, but will forever lack the social history of authentic structures. The preservation of historic places and spaces gives people a sense of place and boosts Columbia’s economy. You can get involved by volunteering, signing up for our mailing list, attending an event, or donating funds.
