We encourage property owners to consider applying for recognition with the city’s Most Notable Property (MNP) program and/or the federal National Register of Historic Places (NHRP). Even though neither designation will protect a property from demolition, the recognition could be a step towards preserving the property and its neighborhood. With the NRHP designation, a property becomes eligible to receive Historic Tax Credits. Both designations are honorary and include no restrictions on the use or alterations of the building.
The National Register of Historic Places
Nominations to the NHRP can be either a single property or a group of properties in the same area. In the latter case, upon approval, the group of properties will be designated a “Historic District” on the NHRP. This is not the same as a “Local Historic District.”
