LOCAL LANDMARKS
A Local Landmark is a single property or building that is deemed worthy of preservation because of its historic merit. Landmarks are not required to have restrictions; however, this would be determined during the petition process. Restrictions can be placed on either interior or exterior elements if they depict historical significance. The property owner(s) determine what restrictions they would like to see in place which can be reconsidered throughout the process, especially if historical research leads to conflicting findings.
To establish a Historic Preservation-Overlay: Landmark (i.e. Local Landmark) the petition is first reviewed by the City’s Historic Preservation Commission. Then an ordinance is created and forwarded to the Planning & Zoning Commission for a public hearing followed by a final approval with the Council.
To become a Local Landmark, contact the City’s Community Development Department at 573-874-7239 or at planning@como.gov.
