June 20: Columbia’s unique architecture

Learn about the history behind Columbia’s architecture at the 7 p.m. June 20 meeting of CoMo Preservation in the Columbia Public Library. Matt Fetterly will share his knowledge about our city’s 200+ years of history.

WHAT'S HISTORY GOT TO DO WITH IT?
Matt will explain the historical forces that have shaped the architecture of Columbia. This talk will explore the shifting architectural tastes of Columbians. We'll hear about what Columbia's architecture shares in common with the rest of the nation and what makes it different. We'll be taking a special look at the Federal, Victorian, and Mid-century Modern styles with examples, and talk about our historic preservation successes and failures of our past.

Matt is an eighth-generation Boone Countian, an alumnus of Hickman High School and the University of Missouri. His lifelong love of Columbia has led him to preserve a growing collection of more than 170 books about Columbia and Boone County. Matt specializes in Columbia, Boone County, and Missouri history, particularly natural history, Black history, indigenous history, LGBT history, and cultural history including architecture, music, art, theater, and cemeteries.

When Matt’s not hitting history, he's hitting the notes as a professional percussionist and musical theater musician working at the Arrow Rock Lyceum, a spot he's held since 2012. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, caving, camping, and floating Missouri's waterways.

All meetings of CoMo Preservation are free and open to the public.
