Did you know the first movie was shown in Columbia in 1897? Learn about the history behind the marquee on Friday, Nov. 3 at the Osher@Mizzou Friday Morning Book Talk.

Each month, Osher sponsors a book talk from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Moss Building at 1905 Hillcrest Drive off Old 63. Doors open at 9 a.m. In November, the speaker will be Dianna Borsi O’Brien, President of CoMo Preservation and Author of Historic Movie Theaters of Columbia. The Book Talks are free for Osher@Mizzou and Columbia Parks and Rec members, $3 for the public. No need to register, drop-ins are welcome.

Dianna will talk about how she wrote the book and the little-known facts behind Columbia’s more than 100 years of movie theater history. She’ll also talk about Columbia’s remaining movie theaters and the remaining “ghost” movie theaters, former theaters that are now used for other purposes.

CoMo Preservation is a nonprofit devoted to helping homeowners, landlords, and institutions preserve Columbia’s historic architecture. While original period styles might be replicated, they will forever lack the social history of authentic structures. The preservation of historic places and spaces gives people a sense of place and boosts Columbia’s economy.
